As we get older, we might worry that asking for help will make others think we can't cope or live at home anymore.
The important thing to remember is that there are many aged care providers like Silverchain who can support you to live well at home.
Think about what will help you
There are also many aged care services and funding options available. To get started, think about what you need to make your daily life easier and keep you independent at home.
Ask yourself:
- What do I need help with?
- What will help me feel more comfortable and confident?
- What can I still do myself?
The answers are different for everyone.
It might be getting a little help around the house or having support to shower. Or it might be help managing chronic and complex health conditions. Here are some reasons why you should consider in home aged care.
Talk to your family, friends or GP
It’s important to talk to your family and friends about your needs and preferences. They can help support and speak for you, to understand complex information, and to define your needs if you’re unable to do so.
Start this conversation by explaining what you want to do in the short and long term. You can also discuss how you can work together to maintain your way of life. For example, "I want to stay in my own home as I grow older. How can we make that happen?"
You can:
- Talk about activities you enjoy doing, before discussing where you feel you need some support.
- Use examples of other family or friends who went through a similar experience.
If you don't feel ready to talk to your family or friends, you can start with your General Practitioner (GP). Remember, these are your decisions, and you can take your time to make them when you’re ready.
Ask about having an assessment
An aged care assessment will help you determine if you are eligible for government subsidised funding. It’s designed to understand your goals so you can access the help you need to achieve them. Learn more about getting an assessment.
